These old books were all black and white, but I have purchased some of my own as an adult that have color pictures. This textbook appealed to me on a variety of levels. As stated by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), “The degree to which students can read and understand text in all formats and all contexts is a key indicator of success in school and in life.”33 However, if teachers and librarians are expected to use popular media materials, such as graphic novels, they should be provided with effective, ongoing professional development opportunities such as workshops, required readings, and discussion groups to develop expertise in using graphic novels in schools and libraries.

Several key questions are addressed: what is the graphic novel? The title of the book has an air of melancholy about it, as does the main character’s habit of mulling over things. They also served as an introduction to graphic novels to my participants. All are available for free reading online as JPEG. Even the speech bubble comes into play, like when a character screams, the edges of the speech bubble become shredded. Wilson, Alphona, and the Marvel team create a modern twist offering fun and diversity for tween readers and beyond.

Along the way, the Bone brothers befriend Thorn, Grandma Ben, Dragon, and the creatures of the forest. Autobiographical and deeply intimate, it traces the relationship Bechdel, a lesbian, has with her father, a closeted gay man, through a lens that’s smart, funny, and tender. Gwen works as a gravedigger at an eco-friendly cemetery by day. The translation from French is highly conversational and Guibert’s technique of painting the page with water and allowing ink to bleed through the wet fibers result in illustrations that are loose yet elegant, cloudy and clear at the same time.

S. 278 Marine Park in Brooklyn and a contributor to SLJ’s Good Comics for Kids blog. Not just elegant handwriting — possibly soon to be a thing of the past in the US — but a close personal relationship with the literary and the graphic in equal measure. While there certainly are great female comic book characters, in general they are treated as Big Boobs in Spandex and it’s just so objectifying. Anya must find a way to detach Emily from her life before things get out of hand.
